The Tiffen Multi Rota Tray (MRT) is a geared rotating tray that allows the use and rotation of a 138mm Circular Polarizer and Variable ND in a 4×5.650 tray and is ideal for matte boxes without a rotating filter stage or for those instances where a secondary rotating filter stage is required in a non-rotating stage.
The Tiffen Multi Rota Tray is designed to fit into a variety of Matte Boxes which conform to ARRI R2 design standards.
- Available in 3 filter configurations with up to 3 distinct filter effects in one unit
- Up to 6-stop (focal length dependent) of Tiffen VND* (Variable Neutral Density) with M8 geared ring for ease of use, minimum of 2-stops.
- Geared 138mm ultra thin Circular Polarizer for greater field of view, when used without combined 4×5.650 Circular Polarizer
- Patented quick release removable 4×5.650 ultra thin Circular Polarizer, when combined with 138mm ultra thin geared Circular Polarizer, will produce a Variable ND or Cool to Warm FX color effect
- Built into a single 6mm tray. Designed to be used with Sunshades and Matte boxes from ARRI®, Bright Tangerine™, Chrosziel®, Movcam, TLS Optics, Vocas, TLS Optics, and more. For concise matte box compatibility, go to http://tiffen.com/mrt-compatibility/
- Geared adjustment for precision exposure for control by hand or industry standard M8 gear wheel
- Uses only one tray space in Matte Box/Clip On Sun Shade, allowing the use of second filter tray
- Tray engravings provide easy positioning
- Includes protective case
- Easy-to-follow quick reference guide included
The thought behind our new “Multi Rota Tray” (MRT) was to design an Arri R2 stand thick filter tray that could be used not only as a Rota Pola, but also double up as a Variable Neutral Density (VND) filter, since a VND is two matched Circular Polarizers used in a pre-alignment combination, where one rotates and the other remains still.
This could only be achieved by
A) reducing the thickness of the glass filters
B) developing a tray that could accommodate a rotating and fixed filter in it ! This is what our NEW patent-pending “Multi Rota Tray” (MRT) delivers.
By taking this approach we have taken the standard Pola Tray concept to new heights of creative exposure control.

How to Configure As Either a Rotating Circular Polarizer, a Variable ND, or a Warm Cool FX:
This product is designed to fit into a variety of Matte Boxes which conform to ARRI R2 design standards. The instructions below will assist you in setting up the unit to deliver three different results. Please refer to http://tiffen.com/mrt-compatibility/ for compatible matte boxes and manufacturer information.
The Tiffen MRT can produce three very distinctive effects. To configure the unit, you will need to follow these instructions. They relate to (1) Which way round the tray has to face when in the Matte Box. (2) Which way the 4×5.65 removable Circular Polarizer (when required) needs to face in the tray.
Tray Engravings
A – FACE
B – FACE
4×5.65 Circular Polarizer Engravings
“FOR VND USE. THIS SIDE MUST FACE THE LENS”
“FOR WARM / COOL FX USE. THIS SIDE MUST FACE THE LENS”
1. To use the MRT as a Rotating Circular Polarizer ONLY: Face the filter tray “A-SIDE”
towards the lens. Do not add the additional 4×5.65 Circular Polarizer. *If supplied.
2. To use the MRT as a Variable Neutral Density (VND):
Place the “4X5.65” filter into the (MRT) tray so that the engraving “FOR VND USE. THIS SIDE MUST FACE THE LENS” is readable. Now place the MRT into the Matte Box / Sunshade. The MRT will now work as a VND in this configuration.
You can now rotate the geared wheel to review. Please use the Alpha markings on the gear ring and the engraved + / – on the “A-FACE” of the tray as a guide to increase or decrease the effect.
Please be advised that the amount of light reduction the MRT can cut, when set up as a VND is focal length dependent. Always check for edge of frame for vignetting and in extreme cases for a dark cross in the center of your frame.
The best way to look for possible vignetting and uneven transmission in your image, is to use a waveform monitor and a solid grey card. Evenly illuminate the grey card making sure the card covers the entire image area of the lens. Any uneven variance in light transmission will show up as you rotate the gear on the monitor.
3. To use as a Warm/Cool FX:
Place the “4X5.65” filter into the (MRT) tray so that the engraving “FOR WARM / COOL USE. THIS SIDE MUST FACE THE LENS” is readable. Now place the MRT into the Matte Box / Sunshade. The MRT will now work as a WARM / COOL FX in this configuration.
You can now rotate the geared wheel to review. Please use the Alpha markings on the gear ring and the engraved + / – on the “A-FACE” of the tray as a guide to increase or decrease the effect.
THE THIRD OPTION
WARM/COOL FX
AND HOW IT WORKS!
A Third Use! Warm/Cool FX
As previously mentioned, the alignment of the Circular Polarizers is crucial in producing a polarized image of the VND effect within the MRT. Since the MRT is a dual filter holding tray, it also currently offers a ‘Third Option’. This is known as the Warm/Cool FX look. This color FX is the by-product of misaligning the 4×5.65 Circular Polarizers fascia.
To use the MRT as a Warm/Cool FX filter, the 4×5.65 Circular Polarizer needs to be added to the MRT with the engraved fascia “ Warm/Cool FX to Face Lens” readable on the MRT tray side B.
The Warming to Cooling effect works on either tray face orientation. Therefore either A-FACE or B-FACE can be slipped into the matte box facing the lens. When you rotate the geared wheel at the top of the MRT, your image will start to change between a Warm to Cool Color FX over the entire image, regardless of focal length.
